The Bridal Gown and Season

One of the many things to consider before buying a bridal dress is at what time of year the wedding will be held.

Depending on the season, consider the following (some are applicable to bridesmaids dresses, too):

Autumn:

  • Medium-weight fabrics such as taffeta, raw silk, silk shantung, silk-faced satin, silk gazar.
  • Lighter-weight trains.
  • Shawls.
  • Three-quarter length sleeves.
  • Scoop necklines.

Winter:

  • Heavy fabrics such as satin, velvet, brocade, heavy damask, heavy taffeta, heavy lace.
  • Heavy beadwork.
  • Long sleeves.
  • Higher necklines.
  • Bridal coat.

Spring:

  • Fabrics such as silk tulle, organza, charmeuse.
  • Tea-length skirts.
  • Cap sleeves or off-the-shoulder neckline.
  • Short gloves.

Summer:

  • Cool fabrics such as linen, polished cotton, lighter-weight satin, dotted Swiss, tulle, chiffon, organza.
  • Spaghetti strap, strapless, halter or backless styles.
  • Short, medium-length, or ankle-length skirts.
